A origem remonta a maio de 1968, quando, munidos de uma visão musical desafiadora e diversificada, dois estudantes universitários (Fred Frith e Tim Hodgkinson) resolvem montar uma banda onde pudessem expressar todas as suas pretenções musicais diferenciadas e que não se fizesse necessário qualquer tipo de apoio da indústria musical ou da mídia especializada.

O marco inicial dos movimentos de vanguarda dentro do Rock Progressivo surgiu quando, em 1973, a banda, já com o baterista Chris Cutler (que mais tarde daria origem ao termo Rock In Opposition), o baixista John Greaves e o Multi-instrumentista Lindsay Cooper, lança seu primeiro e excelente disco Legend.

Cinco anos e 3 brilhantes discos após, a banda, que, no mesmo ano participa e lidera o início do movimento Rock In Opposition, chega ao seu ápice criativo com Western Culture, onde todas as caracteríscas já expostas em seus 4 discos anteriores são mescladas e desenvolvidas de forma obsessiva, culminando na alquimia perfeita de improvisações complexas e intrincadas, influências diversas de toda a espécie, síntese entre simetria e assimetria, atonalismo e quebras de ritmos e andamento, solos doentios e feitos sob rebuscada erudição.

Trata-se, portanto, de uma das bandas (e disco) mais artisticamente importantes da música contemporânea ocidental.
